Cincinnati Bengals’ cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones had his court date continued on Monday, August 19, until Oct. 7.
Jones’ court appearance is from the June 5 altercation outside a bar in downtown Cincinnati. Police said the football player punched a woman after having a brief exchange and assault charges were issued. Jones turned himself in the next day.
The trial will take place after the Bengals host the New England Patriots, but the NFL can hand out its own punishment under the league’s personal conduct policy; however, the NFL has rarely taken any action against a player before the legal process takes place.
It is no known secret that Jones has seen his fair share of legal troubles, and he has been a regular speaker at the NFL rookie symposium to help teach rookies about the consequences of making bad decisions, but Jones expressed having done nothing wrong after the incident on his twitter page:

If Jones were to miss playing time post-trial due an NFL decision, the Bengals would be without their starting cornerback in nickel packages. With the way the Bengals’ secondary has been playing thus far in the preseason, there wouldn’t be much of a drop off in production in a hypothetical Jones absence.
Leon Hall has been the veteran presence on the secondary, and Dre Kirkpatrick has been making huge strides with the team now that he is fully healthy. The Bengals also have veteran Terence Newman who has been splitting time with the second-year corner Kirkpatrick. With the veteran presence and Kirkpatrick’s development, this could be the potential nickel package the Bengals would run if Jones is out, and that is not a bad backup option.
